The Wicked Solutions Show featured a dynamic panel discussion focused on the critical role of storytelling in the social sector, facilitated by Shiv Kumar. The session brought together speakers Ankur Paliwal, Queerbeat; Ashna Ashesh, Helm of Eight; Rajiv Tikko, Senior Journalist, Editor and Consultant Development Communication; and Sudhir Sahani, Pradhan. Speakers shared insights on how effective storytelling can significantly impact civil society organisations (CSOs) and their efforts to engage stakeholders.
The panelists emphasised that simply completing projects is insufficient; it is vital for organisations to showcase their accomplishments and articulate the processes behind them. Sudhir noted that effective storytelling attracts significant stakeholders, while Rajiv pointed out the importance of communicating clear messages, as people often remember experiences more than mere facts. This sentiment was echoed by Ankur, who highlighted how narratives can empower individuals by helping them process their experiences and foster a sense of agency.
As the conversation shifted towards the evolving media landscape, Ankur discussed the rise of media outlets led by marginalised communities, which are essential for addressing the misrepresentation often found in mainstream media. While this shift presents opportunities for greater representation, it also introduces challenges, particularly regarding media fragmentation and audience trust in credible sources. Ashna raised concerns about whether new media encourages critical thinking or merely amplifies fear, while Sudhir pointed to the difficulties of capturing diverse audiences with tailored content, especially given the shortened attention spans of younger generations.
In a separate session, Pamela Shrivastava, Head of Sustainability and APV at Shiv Nadar Foundation gave insights into the initiatives of the Foundation, emphasising the distinction between Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and philanthropy. She articulated the foundation’s commitment to education, driven by a passion for nurturing future leaders, particularly in rural areas. Pamela explained that education is a transformative tool for change, especially for girls in regions facing significant challenges.
She shared the foundation’s response to setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, including the establishment of low-fee boarding schools focused on girls’ education. Despite initial obstacles, such as limited access to technology, the foundation adapted by creating an accessible curriculum and utilising platforms like YouTube for instructional videos. Pamela also highlighted the importance of promoting natural farming among children, connecting them to their roots and addressing initial skepticism from parents.
